What is Downerss?

Downerss is a boutique located in Fishtown, Philadelphia that sells sustainable fashion including secondhand and locally made products. I was lucky enough to meet the owner and hear her story about starting a boutique after working in tech startups as a communications major.

Rivka was very friendly and excited to share her story. She was humble and down to earth, which made the fact the she is 28 and has had a successful boutique and online business for a year and a half even more impressive.

The name for the boutique, Downerss, comes from all of the people that didn’t believe she could do it, but Rivka’s mission is to make the word positive because she’s proof that anything can happen. Her ability to be successful in the industry without a formal fashion degree is inspiring.

The boutique hosts first Fridays, art events, and pop up shops to make it more than a retail store. It’s cool that Rivka wants her shop to be more than just buying clothes because associating retail spaces with creating memories and experiences is proving successful for many brands such as Glossier with their pop up shops.

Downerss has three employees including Rivka, so they wear many hats. Something that she stressed is that there is no task too small or large for any of them.

Rivka gave us a 15% off discount for coming in, which I used towards some new jewelry. I bought two rings and a pair of stud circle earrings, and I’ve been wearing all of them nonstop. Stay on the lookout for posts featuring the pieces.

The boutique is so pretty, and it’s even more impressive because Rivka describes it as Ikea and Pinterest DIYs. If you’re in the Philadelphia area, definitely stop in!

Check out the Downerss website and their Instagram to learn more about the store!
